Job shadow narrative
I have finally accomplished another major step in my high school career. I decided to interview a pediatrician, Dr. Grace, on August 26, 2016 at her office in Lindsay. Although I’m interested in professions involving vet science I’d like to know what a professional field performs.
I arrived at the facility at around 12:50pm a little before Dr. Grace had arrived. The receptionist at the front office greeted me and allowed me to enter the office and wait for Dr. Grace to be available. About a few minutes later she came inside the room. She told me that she would love for me to go into one of the testing rooms and observe as she worked with small children. After that, she finally took me into one of the testing rooms to see a patient who had suffered a second degree burn. Since the child’s mother didn’t speak English I had to translate for her in order to help them both, and make it less difficult to have the conversation. Then I went back into her office and waited for her to call once again. Finally, she called me into on of the testing rooms for newborns. Once I walked in I saw a tiny newborn baby boy and his two proud parents in the room. I was so surprised and excited to have seen the newborn on his first visit to the doctor. Dr. Grace demonstrated a regular examination for a newborn baby and gave the parents baby health care advices. After having the chance to go into almost every testing room to observe her treating patience, she told one of the nurses to show me the facility’s laboratory. The kind nurse took me into the laboratory and showed me where they keep all their vaccination supplies and even showed me how she gets a vaccine ready for the doctor.
I learned how to prepare a vaccine for the doctor and I also learned how to perform regular checkups. I like having the doctor along with her assistants teach me and guide me through with handling young patients and their ailments. I also enjoyed how kindly they had treated me throughout the day. They didn’t have issues with having me visit their workplace and were more than glad to have me observe them to gain knowledge in the medical field. There was nothing I disliked as I stated before they were kind to have me and taught me many things about their careers.
I’m a little interested in this job it seems like a good well paid job but it’s just not the one for me. However I found this experience very fascinating, I simply feel that there is something out there that will interest me more and will influence my career choices. Interviewing a pediatrician and having the opportunity of observing her for several hours has given me an insight in the workforce. I am also more opened to other career choices. This was a really good experience for me.
